REEL ASIAN for REAL!

check the teaser

Come check out Dean's short film screening at the NFB mediatheque on Friday Nov 17 at 1pm:

Tubig For A Small World
Dir. Dean Vargas
2006, Canada, 8 min, Video

Tubig (pronounced TOO-big) in the Filipino dialect of Tagalog means "water". Through the currents of water and the actions of two young women at opposite ends of the world, this video examines global inequalities to natural resources. Working with a creative team of young artists, Vargas combines photographs of urban Toronto with shantytown streets in Thailand and the Philippines to construct a slick motion-graphics environmental adventure.

Tubig For a Small World was made for Trinity Square Video's Themed Commission Projects égalité. While exploring critical world issues, emerging director Dean Vargas took this opportunity to connect and learn about his culture.

life at home

our house quintiples (???) as home, haven, gourmet kitchen, office and art studio. it is madness sometimes but at least now we have space for it. actually for once, our place is a hub of activity which i like. here's some homely pics of deans and i trying to amuse ourselves after delirious work schedules.

feast your eyes

here's some drawings and studies that i've been working on. my observation skills are getting pretty good if i might say so myself. i'm only confident enough to write that since i personally have been witnessing the growth in myself and it feels so good.

here's my latest drawing...a self-portrait drawn from a mirror. i know i look a bit intense but i find that to be revealing and it has a strong psychological effect. at first i was quite creeped out by how it looked, but overall, i think it was a good experience. i look like a mature version of myself...pensive, intense but completely open and exposed. makes me reflect on the idea of aging, maturing and turning 30 in another few weeks. with my next self portrait i will definately be more exploratory. but being my first go at it, i really wanted to emphasize accuracy and technique. i've included different versions of it. you'll see that i've cropped the final version because the lingerie just was not doing anything for the composition.

Aggro Bitch

I want to kill so many people today. But for clarification, I don't mean that literally - but you never know who might misinterpret your words on the internet. Ahhhh...the joys of being a writer and having your words sucked out of you like the last drop of blood on a zombie planet. I often think in times like these that a puppy would be the solution to all my problems. When I'm feeling aggro like this, then I'm sure a slobbering pup that lives and breathes for me would just make me feel like a million bucks while my words get reduced to nothing. Wish me happy editing.

i want a puppy!!!!!!!
